Are you or a loved one considering professional help for an eating disorder? Let's explore different levels of eating disorder care in the state of Maryland, from outpatient to inpatient.
Who Should Seek Eating Disorder Treatment?
The National Eating Disorder Association defines an eating disorder as "serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights".
Types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorders, pica, and other specified feeding and eating disorders. It's important to note that an eating disorder does not discriminate and can impact any individual of any size, which is why it's important to be aware of the signs and symptoms.
Levels of Eating Disorder Care in Maryland
There are different levels of treatment for eating disorder care, including outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential, and inpatient.
Outpatient care includes meeting with your treatment team once a week for continued care. This includes, but is not limited to seeing a therapist and dietitian who specialize in the treatment of eating disorders. An eating disorder physician and psychiatrist should also be seen as needed in the outpatient setting.
Intensive outpatient is commonly referred to as Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) and is where a client meets with a treatment team 3 to 5 days a week for a few hours each day.
Partial hospitalization is commonly referred to as Partial Hospitalization Programming (PHP) and is a full-day treatment program for 5 days a week.
Residential treatment consists of clients gaining access to 24/7 support with a full medical team while staying in the residential facility. Day programming is led by clinicians on weekdays and weekends, with medical support during the night if needed.
The highest level of treatment for eating disorder care is inpatient. Inpatient care takes place in a hospital unit and continuous until the individual is medically stable for residential.
